Inspiration for Today

Carpe the fuck out of this diem. ~slogan on a pair of socks

Several years ago, a friend gave me a pair of socks with this slogan on each sock. I don’t know what motivated her to give me this gift, especially since I never ever heard a cuss word come out of her mouth. Never. Soft-spoken, kind, generous to a fault, she surprised me. It seemed so out of character. That made the gift even funnier. I tucked the socks in a drawer with a chuckle and then sort of forgot they were in there.

Until I got cancer two years ago. Not knowing initially whether my days were suddenly running out, I decided to make every day count. I remembered the socks. I wore them to every appointment, every test, every surgery. They were a funny and serious (seriously funny?) reminder to not let myself get distracted from what really mattered – love, gratitude, peace, compassion, beauty. They became part of the sacred path I walked that year. After emerging from the intensity of the process, I thanked them by burning them along with other cancer talismans in the Viking funeral I orchestrated to send my warrior uterus off to Valhalla.

We don’t have to wear special socks or get cancer, however, (thank goodness!) to remember that every day is precious. Every day is a new beginning, a new opportunity to choose what is most important. Whatever that is for you, choose it with your attention, your time, your heart, your whole self. Choose it fearlessly and joyfully. And have a wonder-full day.

Each day
Is one day less to live
Do not waste it
So that when death comes
As it surely will
You can lay your body down
Satisfied that not one day
Was left unloved

    I love this
    Each day
Is one day less to live
    Do not waste it
    So that when death comes
    As it surely will
You can lay your body down
    Satisfied that not one day
    Was left unloved

  2. Hi Galen! So very wonderful. As you say, none of us should wait to remember how precious life is and that every day is a gift. And we should never wait to tell those we love and care for how much they mean to us. Thank YOU for your words. ~Kathy

  3. Every day lived is a rare opportunity not to be wasted or taken for granted, I Love your Socks that inspired you during a most difficult time.

I admire your Viking funeral ritual to mark the end of the process. I have a pair of socks that read – this grandma’s seen some shit. I feel just a tad emboldened when I think of them on my feet!

    1. Haha — love your socks! So true! The Viking funeral was amazing. There were so many synchronicities that happened in connection to it. Everyone has to find their own way through challenges. But that was the way that was meaningful to me. Thanks for commenting.
